The EU is surprised by how Ukraine is preparing for its accession to the European Union

As of today, Ukraine's progress in meeting the conditions for joining the European Union is impressive. This was stated by European Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius, as reported by RBC-Ukraine citing LRT.

"Today, the progress can be assessed as impressive, because let's not forget that Ukraine's most important priority is, of course, to win, end the war, win back the territories, and at the same time, it is successfully carrying out reforms", - said Sinkevičius.

Sinkevičius added that the reforms already undertaken by Kyiv, concerning the judicial system and media freedom, are "very important, almost fundamental, like the glue that holds the EU together".

He nevertheless expressed that further progress, particularly in the fight against corruption and curtailing the influence of oligarchs, pose more complex challenges that will take more time to resolve.

"The European Commission promises to present a full detailed assessment at the beginning of October, to present updated recommendations to Ukraine and I have no doubt that, seeing as it is now the Government of Ukraine is working, they will try to implement it quite quickly", - the commissioner added.

He noted that it's not enough to simply check off a passed law, it needs to be properly implemented.

"And the European Commission will also assess the implementation of these laws to ensure they are effective", - he concludes.

As reported, Ukraine has completed the first stage of self-screening for compliance with European standards legislation.
