The U.S. State Department approved the potential military sales of NASAMS to Ukraine

The U.S. State Department has approved the potential military sales of the NASAMS surface-to-air missile system and related equipment to the Ukrainian government. This information was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing the Defense Security Cooperation Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense.

The estimated cost is $285 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress.

The Government of Ukraine has requested to buy the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS), that includes:

·        one AN/MPQ-64F1 Sentinel Radar;

·        Fire Distribution Center (FDC);

·        canister launchers,

·        secure communications,

·        GPS receivers, code loaders, and cable sets;

·        tool kits and test equipment;

·        support equipment, prime movers, generators, technical documentation, spare parts;

·        U.S. Government and contractor technical support.

"This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a partner country that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe.

Ukraine has an urgent need to increase its capabilities to defend against Russian missile strikes and aircraft. Acquiring and effectively deploying this capability will enhance Ukraine’s ability to defend its people and protect critical national infrastructure", - the statement says.

NASAMS is a mobile surface-to-air missile system capable of launching 72 missiles in 12 seconds. It is used to intercept aircraft, helicopters and cruise missiles within a radius of up to 40 km.

Ukrainian military forces acquired the NASAMS air defense system in November 2022. In just five months, air defense units have destroyed over a hundred russian missiles and drones using this system.
