Ukrainian people have become laureates of the Sakharov Prize, which is awarded annually by the European Parliament. This was reported on Twitter by President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, - RBC-Ukraine reports on October 19.

"They are standing up for what they believe in. Fighting for our values, - Metsola noted. - Protecting democracy, freedom & rule of law. Risking their lives for us. No one is more deserving. Congratulations to the brave people of Ukraine! "

It is specified that the Sakharov Prize was awarded to the Ukrainian people in the person of President Volodymyr Zelensky.

It is emphasized that the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought is a human rights award founded in 1988 by the European Parliament. The award is the main human rights award of the EU.

"Members of the European Parliament nominate candidates for the Sakharov Prize in September every year", - the message says. - Each candidate must enlist the support of at least 40 members of parliament, and each individual deputy can support only one candidate".

It was earlier reported that the people of Ukraine and Zelensky were nominated for the Sakharov Prize.
