The Kremlin has stated that Putin's "historical research" does not mean doubts about the territorial integrity of Ukraine. This was stated to Russian media by press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.
"In his article, Putin spoke in general about those catastrophes waiting to happen that were planted in the USSR, about legal principles, etc. As for the discussion of the article, it is very active, the article is quite high-profile and attracts the attention of various experts, who express different points of view. You know that no one officially questions the territorial integrity of Ukraine. There have been no official statements on this matter. Experts are free to discuss it as they want", - Peskov said.
As previously reported, Putin posted an article on the Kremlin's website in Ukrainian and Russian about "the historical unity of Russians and Ukrainians". In it, he stated that after the collapse of the USSR, Ukraine would have to return to the borders of 1922. "Let me remind you here the assessment given by one of the most prominent political figures of the new Russia, first mayor of St. Petersburg A. Sobchak. As a legal professional, he believed that any decision should be legitimate, and therefore, he expressed the following opinion in 1992: the republics - founders of the Union, after they themselves annulled the Treaty of 1922, should return to the borders in which they joined the Union. All other territorial acquisitions are a subject for discussion and negotiations, because the basis has been canceled", - V.Putin wrote.
