The Verkhovna Rada has supported the renaming of the front-line village of Novhorodske in the Donetsk oblast into New York, - correspondent of OstroV reports.

301 people's deputies supported the decision.

The decision was supported by all parliamentary factions and groups.

The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance notes in an explanatory note to the adopted document that the return of the historical name "New York" to Novhorod deserves all-round support.

The Institute points out that the renaming New York to the Novhorodske settlement by the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on October 19, 1951 was dictated by the political and ideological considerations of the Communist Party.

It is also noted that the issue of renaming Novhorodske was supported by the territorial community, agreed in accordance with the legislation, considered and approved by the Novhorod township council, the civil-military administration of the city of Toretske and the Donetsk regional civil-military administration.
