European Union agrees to extend sanctions against Russia for another six months

The heads of state and government of the European Union countries have given political consent to the continuation of economic sanctions against Russia due to its destabilizing actions in Ukraine at the summit yesterday. This is announced by press secretary of the President of the European Council Barend Leits, - European Pravda reports.

"There is an agreement to extend the sanctions against Russia at the European Council", - he wrote on Twitter.

It became known at the end of November that the EU leaders were going to extend economic sanctions against Russia for another six months in December without disputes.

The EU sanctions against specific sectors of the Russian economy are valid until January 31, 2021. They were introduced in 2014 due to the destabilizing actions of Russia against Ukraine and are aimed at the financial, energy and defense sectors of the Russian Federation, as well as at the sphere of dual-use goods. Since then, the EU has continued restrictions every six months due to the lack of progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements by Russia.
