Prime Minister predicts sharp increase in unemployment in Ukraine, but promises workplaces

Nearly 200 thousand Ukrainians have received unemployed status since the beginning of quarantine. This was reported today by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in the Verkhovna Rada during an hour of questions to the government, - correspondent of OstroV reports.

"Almost 200 thousand people have received unemployed status since the beginning of quarantine. According to our forecasts, a sharp increase in the unemployed is projected this year - up to 9.4% (this figure was 8.2% in 2019)", - he stated.

According to him, a program on creating new jobs will be presented in the near future.

"It is very important that the Big Construction program will become part of our plan to create 500 thousand workplaces in Ukraine. We will create 154 thousand workplaces directly in the field of road construction and transport, plus in the related fields", - Shmyhal noted.

As previously reported, as of May 13, 16 425 cases of COVID-19 coronavirus were confirmed in Ukraine, 439 people died, 3716 were cured.

Earlier, the Cabinet of Ministers extended quarantine until May 22, but with certain concessions, which entered into force on May 11.
