About 36 thousand children in Ukraine receive status of victims of armed conflict - Denisova

About 36 thousand children in Ukraine have received the status of victims of the armed conflict. This was stated by authorized representative of the Verkhovna Rada on human rights Lyudmyla Denisova at the international conference "Ensuring the rights of a child in the armed conflict" in Kyiv, - she wrote on Facebook.

"As initiator of the event, I emphasized that we gathered here to discuss possible ways to strengthen the protection of a child that appeared to be in the face of armed conflict and make relevant recommendations to the governments of states. There are about 36 000 children who have received the status of victims of armed conflict in Ukraine. At the same time, almost 25 000 children live and study in the so-called grey zone every day, and 177 educational institutions are within the reach of shelling", - Denisova noted.

According to her, children receive serious injuries and are subjected to violence and psychological traumas, remaining without a family, parents or home.

Denisova noted that almost 200 thousand children left their territory of residence and were forced to adapt to new conditions.

"Children faced these problems in Ukraine because of the military aggression of the Russian Federation, temporary occupation of certain areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. Despite the fact that the whole world celebrates the 30th anniversary of adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of a child this year, it was never able to become the document that effectively protects the rights of children in practice, and, as Ukrainian experience shows, no country in the world can be sure that the misfortune of a war will get around it. I am convinced that the recommendations prepared at the conference will have to be taken into account and used as much as possible both in the implementation of state policies and in the exercise of local authority", - she stressed.
