Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that Russia had begun a massive granting of citizenship of the Russian Federation to residents of the occupied Donbass in order to "protect the rights of compatriots". He told this in an interview with Russian RBC.

"If the protection of Russian-speaking people, Russian culture and language is politics, then we cannot get away from this politics. Just as Europeans and Americans can hardly stop protecting the rights of their compatriots who have been threatened. In this case, there are millions of our compatriots. They are citizens of Ukraine, but many of them are citizens of Russia. There will be more of them, given the decision made, issued by presidential decree", - he said.

As previously reported, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the decree on the simplified procedure for granting Russian citizenship to residents of the occupied Donbass. At one time, such a massive "passportization" of Georgian citizens led to the open invasion of Russia under the slogan of protecting compatriots and rejection of Abkhazia and South Ossetia from Georgia.
