Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has once again confirmed his intention to provide autocephaly to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. This is stated in his message to the Ukrainian people in connection with the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor.

"…just as we have granted autocephaly to all local Churches, the Holy and Sacred Synod has similarly decided to grant autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine, which is tormented in many ways, so that she, too, may join the plentitude of Orthodoxy in unity and internal peace. Only the First Throne of Orthodoxy, the Church of Constantinople, holds this high responsibility according to the Holy and Sacred Canons", - the message said.

As previously reported, on October 11, the synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate decided to provide Tomos of Autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine. Now a Council should be convened in Kyiv with the participation of bishops of the UOC-KP, UAOC and UOC-MP, who appealed to the Ecumenical Patriarch with a request for Tomos. The Council will make a church unification, creating a single local UOC, and will elect its primate. After that, the primate of a single local autocephalous UOC will receive Tomos as a document (certificate).

On November 3, President Petro Poroshenko and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew signed the agreement "On Cooperation and Interaction between Ukraine and the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople".
