Russian officer, senior lieutenant Oleg Leontiev, accused of the death of soldier-conscript Ilya Gorbunov, in his last speech at the trial told about his participation in the "event in the territory of a neighboring country", where "there was no" Russian military. This is reported by Meduza, referring to the Mother's Right Foundation, which represents the interests of the sisters of the deceased soldier at the trial.

It is noted that Leontiev asked the court for a verdict that would allow him to continue his service and join Russian troops in Syria.

"After the positive decision of the court, I will immediately fly there to bring some benefit to the state. I already participated in one of such events, but the only thing was that it was in the territory of a neighboring country where we allegedly haven’t been", - he said.

A resident of the Bryansk region, Ilya Gorbunov, was killed on February 6, 2017 during his service in Naro-Fominsk (13th Tank Regiment, military unit 32010). According to the prosecution, his commander Leontiev ordered him to transfer the tank, although he did not have the appropriate training. Prior to the start of the process, the relatives of the deceased admitted that he could be killed by fellow soldiers, who then staged his death in a tank.
