A special meeting of the UN Security Council on situation in the occupied Crimea will be held on Thursday. This is reported by BBC Ukraine with reference to the permanent mission of Ukraine to the UN.

"This meeting was initiated by Ukraine. It is important, considering that it is planned to illegally conduct Russian presidential elections in the Crimea on March 18", - speaker of the Ukrainian mission to the UN Oleh Nikolenko stated.

"The purpose of such meeting is to get information from a wider range of sources. It is important for Ukraine as it will give an opportunity to continue political pressure on Russia", - the diplomat explained.

Thus Ukraine plans to draw attention to the annexation of Crimea, violation of human rights there, as well as to "the need to strengthen the UN's role in the issue of de-occupation of the Ukrainian peninsula".

The meeting will be attended by representatives of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People and Deputy Foreign Minister Olena Zerkal.

The meeting will be held in the Arria format, that is, not only members of the Security Council, but also other states, as well as representatives of civil society will be able to take part in it.
