The Novoaidar District Court in the Luhansk oblast has sentenced Russian citizen Viktor Ageyev to ten years in prison on terrorism counts. This was stated by Ageyev's lawyer Viktor Chevguz, - Interfax-Ukraine reports.

"The Novoaidar District Court in the Luhansk oblast sentenced Russian citizen Viktor Ageyev to ten years in prison", - Chevguz wrote on his Facebook on Thursday.

The lawyer also noted that the day before, the court finalized the inquiry into Ageyev's case, and the legal debate took place. "The prosecutor described the self-proclaimed LNR as a terrorist organization, in which Russian citizen V. Ageyev enrolled under a contract", - the lawyer noted.

Ageyev was also charged with illegal possession and carrying of firearms and ammunition. The prosecutor demanded 12 years and property confiscation for Ageyev on several counts.

"The defence believes that the prosecutor's classification of V. Ageyev's conduct under Part 1, Article 258-3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (membership in a terrorist organization) is erroneous. The court has agreed with the prosecutor's opinion, but we will appeal the sentence from the angle of classification and penalty. We believe that the ten-year sentence is too severe, considering the alleviating circumstances", - Chevguz added.

Also, the lawyer compared previous similar verdicts for Russian servicemen, who fought in the Donbass in favor of militants.

"As known, the Holosiivskyi District Court of Kyiv sentenced Russian citizens Yerofeyev and Aleksandrov to 14 years in prison last year under similar articles of the Criminal Code, but we have our own observations in this respect", - he summed up.

As previously reported, Russian citizen Viktor Ageyev was detained by the Ukrainian military on June 24, 2017 in the Luhansk oblast during the liquidation of sabotage and reconnaissance group of the "LNR" militants. During the interrogation, the Russian called himself a contract serviceman of the Russian army, later his mother also confirmed it, saying that in May 2017, Ageyev was awarded the title of corporal. The Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation states that Viktor Ageyev has never been on volunteer military service in Russia.
