A Democratic victory in the U.S. elections will make it more difficult for President Donald Trump to implement his political agenda during the second half of his term. He will have to seek compromises with Congress, where Democrats will control the majority, and also fend off attempts by his opponents to initiate a third impeachment. Political analyst Ihor Chalenko, head of the Center for Analysis and Strategies, expressed this opinion in a comment to OstroV.
"First and foremost, it will be harder for him to implement his election program during the second half of his own presidential term. He will have to devote more resources to communicating with Congress, to disputes and political debate, make more active use of his veto power, and face delays in the passage and signing of laws adopted by Congress. Essentially, this is a classic system of checks and balances in American politics. During the first half of his term, the Supreme Court was Trump's biggest problem, as it actively overturned some of his decisions, particularly those concerning trade policy. Now, however, he will have to work harder to find compromises with both chambers of Congress, where Democrats will control the majority", - the political analyst noted.
Chalenko also drew attention to the possibility that Democrats may step up their efforts to secure a third impeachment of Trump. Although, in his assessment, there are not enough votes in the Senate to bring this procedure to a successful conclusion, the issue itself will create additional political pressure on the president.
Another possible consequence of the elections could be a transformation of the Republican Party itself. As the expert explained, as Trump's political influence weakens, Republicans may find it disadvantageous to associate the entire party exclusively with the incumbent president. This will affect not only internal party processes but also the position of sponsors, who will be assessing the new political circumstances.
"In recent months, the Republican Party has increasingly resembled what could be called the Vance Party. He was the one being backed as the main candidate in the November 2028 presidential election. But given the new circumstances and the catastrophic decline in the Republicans' standing, I would not be surprised if certain changes take place within the party", - Chalenko said.
At the same time, he said, it is too early to speak about the specific direction these changes might take — internal party developments need to be monitored.
"The situation is also ambiguous for the Democrats. They have still failed to produce a candidate for the 2028 presidential election who can match Trump in charisma. Therefore, the confrontation with Trump will continue for now, and the struggle in Congress will clearly become one of the main focuses of their political activity", - the political analyst concluded.
