Elections in Ukraine cannot take place while the war continues, so international pressure should be directed primarily at russia to force it to end the war. This was stated by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, Ukrainska Pravda reports.
Elections in Ukraine will become possible after hostilities cease, while international partners’ efforts should currently focus on forcing russia to stop the war, the EU’s top diplomat emphasized.
“Virtually every constitution stipulates that elections cannot be held during wartime. And, as I understand it, President Zelensky has also said that if a ceasefire is in place, he is ready to hold elections as soon as possible”, - Kallas said, commenting on U.S. President Donald Trump’s call for new elections in Ukraine.
The EU High Representative also drew attention to the fact that elections inevitably mean political competition within the country, while Ukraine continues to face external aggression.
“Elections are always a struggle between different groups within a country, while the attacks come from outside. That is why it is very important to preserve the unity of the people while the war continues”, - Kallas said.
She emphasized that international partners’ efforts should be directed at forcing russia to end the war.
As reported, Trump is irritated by Zelensky’s unwillingness to make concessions and is already proposing a “new president” for Ukraine. In response, Zelensky stated that Ukraine would hold elections if putin agreed to a 60-day ceasefire.
