The Russian Foreign Ministry considers the prolongation of European Union sanctions against Russia because of its failure to settle the conflict in Donbass to be illogical. This is stated in the comment of the Department of Information and Press of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"The fact that the EU is connects its sanctions with the settlement of the conflict in the South-East of Ukraine is artificial and groundless", - said the commentary.

According to the official version of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the conflict in Donbass "wasn’t started by Russia but the current Ukrainian authorities", that allegedly tried to suppress the opposition in Donbass to the coup in Kiev in February 2014.

As previously reported, after Viktor Yanukovich’s escape from Ukraine, Russia with the help of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation annexed Crimea and started hybrid war in Donbas. Its first step was the organization of the pro-Russian demonstrations. For this purpose, they gave much money and the role of "the indignant residents of Donbass" was played by Russian extremists. Russia is currently providing militants of Donbass with weapons and ammunition, as well as military assistance of the forces of the regular army.
