“We must answer a fundamental question: how should the state function if the war lasts for years? And the next one — what if the war lasts another year? Two? Three? Can russia effectively be given the right to determine when Ukrainians will again be able to choose their government? I am convinced that it cannot. Democracy cannot be held hostage by russia”, - said former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
According to him, Ukraine must find a legal, safe, and realistic mechanism that will allow a full democratic process to resume even amid a protracted war.
“This is difficult. The right to vote must be ensured for military personnel. For millions of Ukrainians abroad. For people in frontline regions. The security of the electoral process, the independence of institutions, and trust in the result must be ensured. But difficulty does not mean impossibility. Ukraine has already done many times what the world considered impossible”, - Fedorov emphasized.
