Ukraine and the United States are discussing the possibility of a scenario in which hostilities could effectively be “frozen” along the current front line. This was reported by The Economist, citing diplomatic sources and the course of informal consultations, Slovo i Dilo writes.

According to the publication, this does not involve a full-fledged peace agreement, but rather an interim de-escalation mechanism that could halt active combat operations without an immediate political settlement of territorial issues.

One of the options under discussion envisages creating conditions to reduce the intensity of fighting in a zone approximately 50–70 kilometers wide along the line of contact.

Such an approach is being considered as a possible first stage of a broader process that could eventually include further ceasefire agreements and the formation of a longer-term “security architecture”. At the same time, as The Economist emphasizes, no final decisions or agreed texts of any agreements currently exist.

At the same time, the publication stresses that even if such a scenario is implemented, the key contradictions between the sides will remain unresolved. In particular, this concerns the status of the occupied territories and long-term security guarantees, which remain the main obstacle to any final peace settlement.

The Economist also notes that the idea of “freezing” the war is being considered as a pragmatic option for stabilizing the situation at the front, but not as an end to the conflict.
