Leaders of the leading European countries intend to use the upcoming G7 summit in France to try to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump to agree to a new approach to negotiations with russia on ending the war in Ukraine. This was reported on June 11 by Radio Liberty's Telegram channel, citing Bloomberg.
According to the article, Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz, and Keir Starmer believe that the initiative in the war has now shifted to Ukraine, creating a window of opportunity for negotiations with russia on terms more favorable to Ukraine than before. In particular, the publication states that European leaders want Trump to agree to move beyond the conditions discussed at the summit between the U.S. and russian presidents in Alaska last year. Russian authorities have referred to the agreements reached in Anchorage, demanding, among other things, that Ukraine withdraw its troops from the Donetsk oblast. The United States has never publicly called on Ukraine to do so, although President Trump has repeatedly said that both sides must make compromises to end the war.
Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted Ukraine's successes on the battlefield and stated that peace negotiations are currently not actually taking place. However, he also said that the United States is prepared to return to the role of mediator if the necessary conditions arise.
At a recent meeting in London, the leaders of the UK, Germany, and France, together with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, formulated their conditions for negotiations. They want russia to agree to an immediate ceasefire based on the current frontline as a "starting point for negotiations", as well as security guarantees for Ukraine, including the deployment of multinational forces. Moscow has previously rejected these demands.
The leaders of the European trio, the publication says, believe that as the United States shifts its focus toward the Middle East, there is a chance that Trump will support their proposals to increase pressure on russia in order to bring it to negotiations involving representatives of Europe, the United States, Ukraine, and russia.
The G7 summit, which Donald Trump will attend, will take place in France next week. Volodymyr Zelensky has also been invited.
On June 11, the ambassadors to moscow of the countries mentioned in the Bloomberg report — France, the United Kingdom, and Germany — arrived for a meeting with russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin. Earlier, russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the ambassadors themselves had requested the meeting. No information has yet been released about what was discussed there.
