“Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha proposed that the European Union help negotiate a mutual refusal of strikes on airports with russia. Sybiha voiced this idea during a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels”, - the “The Moscow Times” Telegram channel reported on May 12, citing Politico.
Sybiha noted that the diplomatic process under U.S. auspices had slowed down, while putin was showing no readiness for a broad peace agreement, so Kyiv, according to the minister, “probably needs a new role for Europe” in the negotiations.
“Perhaps we will try to achieve a so-called airport truce”, - the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said, explaining that this meant a mutual cessation of strikes on airports.
According to Andrii Sybiha, russia may be interested in such an agreement because major russian airports are increasingly facing operational shutdowns due to drone attacks. European partners could create a separate platform or special group to discuss this format, the minister clarified, adding that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had already discussed the idea with some European leaders.
At the same time, Sybiha stressed that Ukraine was not proposing that Europe replace the United States in the negotiations. “This should be a complementary direction — not instead of, not an alternative”, - the head of the diplomatic department said.
