Ukraine has initiated arbitration proceedings against Russia for violation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. It is reported by the press service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"Ukraine has initiated arbitration proceedings against the Russian Federation in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, 1982 (hereinafter - the Convention) in order to protect its rights as a coastal state adjacent to the Crimea maritime zones in the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait," - said the statement.
The Foreign Ministry reminded that since the beginning of the illegal annexation of the Crimea by the Russian Federation, Ukraine's rights in these areas had been violated and usurped by the state-aggressor.
"Despite the protests of Ukraine, Russia continues to commit illegal actions within the maritime zones of Ukraine. Therefore, Ukraine has to resort to arbitration in accordance with the provisions of the Convention. By joining the Convention, Ukraine and the Russian Federation agreed to a dispute resolution procedure by arbitration, its decision is bound to be executed by the parties," - said the statement of the Foreign Ministry.
It is noted that Ukraine asks the tribunal to confirm its rights as a coastal state and to oblige the Russian Federation to cease its internationally wrongful acts in relevant sea areas, to provide Ukraine with appropriate assurances and guarantees of non-repetition and compensate Ukraine all losses caused by the Russian Federation.
