“Peace is achieved when you are strong — not with loud words or threats, but with real capabilities that the enemy respects”, - said Hegset before the start of the NATO defense ministers’ meeting in Brussels (as quoted by Reuters), “The Moscow Times” Telegram channel reported on October 15.
The head of the Pentagon emphasized that allies should more actively invest in the PURL program, which replaced the previous system of direct arms supplies from the US.
Now each country must independently purchase American weapons and transfer them to Ukraine. “We expect that today more partners will increase their contributions so that Ukraine receives everything it needs and this conflict moves closer to an end”, - he added.
According to the publication, Hegset’s call was prompted by the decline in the volume of military aid to Kyiv in July and August. According to a report by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, support for Ukraine decreased by 43% compared to the first half of the year. Now most of the aid is provided through the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program. Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden have already joined the initiative.
