The U.S. is moving away from the idea of a ceasefire because russia doesn’t like it, and intends to focus on long-term solutions to the war in Ukraine. This was stated by Vice President J.D. Vance at the Munich Security Conference on May 7.

According to the U.S. Vice President, russia is asking for “too much” at the negotiating table, and between Ukraine’s and russia’s positions, there is currently a gulf.

“The step we want to take right now is for both the russians and the Ukrainians to agree on some basic principles to start a conversation. It’s very important for russians and Ukrainians to begin talking to each other”, - added the American Vice President.

He also said that the U.S. feels “frustration” with both sides, as “they hate each other so much that when you have a one-hour conversation with one side, the first thirty minutes they’re just complaining about some historical grievances”.

The U.S. considers it “absurd” that Kyiv and moscow are not negotiating, and Vance calls such contact the next major necessary step in talks.

“The U.S. wants moscow and Kyiv to begin talking to each other, and Washington is ready to take part in this process”, - said Vance.
