This conclusion was voiced by former russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu in an interview with russian media.
“Where would these ‘peacekeepers’ come from? They would be units of the same NATO countries whose presence Russia opposed even before the start of the SMO, which began largely because of this threat — the deployment of NATO military infrastructure in Ukraine, on our historic territory”, - said the russian politician, now serving as secretary of the russian Security Council.
Shoigu argued that the word “peacekeepers” is used to conceal the real aim. “In reality, foreign states want to bring a contingent into Ukraine that will control its resources. It would be more accurate to call such soldiers occupiers or interventionists”, - he “defended” Ukraine’s sovereignty.
“Clear‑minded politicians in Europe understand that implementing such a scenario could lead to a direct clash between NATO and Russia and, subsequently, to World War III”, - Shoigu said.
Who would play the role of aggressor in that case, the former russian defense minister did not specify.
