The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) discovered additional bookkeeping errors in the Pentagon's calculations of the cost of ammunition, missiles, and other equipment sent to Ukraine, amounting to $2 billion. This was reported by "Voice of America".

It was found that "due to incorrect assessment, the budget for American aid increased to $8.2 billion", according to a US government report published on Thursday.

The Department of Defense "faced difficulties in accurately assessing the defense items sent to Ukraine due to unclear definitions in the financial reporting", stated the new GAO report.

Earlier in 2023, the Pentagon reported that its staff had used the term "replacement cost" instead of "depreciated value" to calculate the funds spent on aid to Ukraine.

The identified difference of $6.2 billion opened the possibility of sending additional equipment and gear worth several billion dollars to Kyiv.

The Pentagon then informed the GAO that "an additional $2 billion in overvaluation had been discovered".

As a result, an additional $2 billion worth of weaponry may be sent to Ukraine to cover the discrepancy in the aid approved by the Biden administration.

The GAO stated that "the vague definition of equipment value in the Foreign Assistance Act and the lack of specific guidelines for cost evaluation led to inconsistencies in the reported value of military aid".

In one example provided in the GAO report, 10 vehicles were valued at $7,050,000, even though supporting documentation showed their book value was zero.
