Mark Rutte, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, has officially been confirmed as the Secretary General of NATO. This was announced by the press service of the North Atlantic Alliance.

On Wednesday, June 26th, the North Atlantic Council decided to appoint Rutte as the next NATO Secretary General.

Rutte will replace Jens Stoltenberg, who has been Secretary General for ten years since 2014. Rutte will assume his duties on October 1st, when Stoltenberg's mandate ends.

Last week, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis withdrew his candidacy for the NATO Secretary General position, which cleared the way for Rutte's appointment.
