The European Union has extended economic sanctions against Russia for another six months for its actions in Ukraine. The decision was taken today by the Committee of Permanent Representatives of EU member states (COREPER). It is reported by UNIAN.

"We can confirm that the COREPER agreed on the extension of preventive measures taking into consideration Russian actions that destabilize the situation in Ukraine and the subsequent evaluation of the fulfillment of the Minsk agreements," - stated the EU Council. The sanctions are extended for another six months - until January 31, 2017. This decision should be finally adopted by the EU Council. The date of the relevant meeting is not known, but it is expected to happen before the end of July.

EU sanctions may restrict cooperation with Russian banks, import and export trade, particularly oil, gas and arms.
